Mental Wealth: Your Mind is a Bank - Are You Investing in It?

It's a question we've all been asked: "How's your mental health?" For many, the answer often feels like a struggle.

We’ve been conditioned to think about mental health as something we only address when it’s failing - a reactive approach that’s costing us dearly. But what if we started thinking about it differently?

What if we saw our mental well-being not as a fragile state to be protected, but as a valuable asset to be grown?

This is the philosophy of Mental Wealth, and it's at the heart of our mission. I've spent over two decades in the mental health industry, and what I've learned is that our traditional systems are broken.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) confirms this reality, reporting that only 29% of people with psychosis and a third of people with depression receive formal mental health care. The system is built on long waiting lists and a "get sick, get help" model that simply doesn't work. It's a sad reality that more construction workers in the UK die by suicide than from workplace accidents, highlighting a crucial need for change.

This is why I founded Mental Wealth International. My goal was to create a proactive approach to workplace mental health—one that empowers individuals to build a wealth vault of resilience. Just like you make daily deposits into a bank account, you can build your mental well-being through daily habits.

We call this the compound effect. It's about finding what works for you and consistently making small, positive choices.

  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Even a few minutes of quiet can help calm the mind and build inner peace.

  • Physical Movement: Whether it's a brisk walk or a full workout, exercise is a powerful tool for managing stress.

  • Journaling: Putting your thoughts on paper helps you process emotions and gain clarity.

  • Quality Sleep: Getting adequate rest is fundamental to your ability to cope with daily challenges.

By consistently "banking" these habits, you create a reserve of strength to draw upon when life's inevitable challenges occur. This is our core belief, and it's what drives our innovative solutions, which are being recognised globally.

From Crisis Management to Proactive Investment

My team and I are dedicated to bringing this philosophy to life. Our innovative online Mental Health Toolbox Talks were created to deliver on-demand support directly to workplaces, addressing a client’s request for monthly in-person training with a far more flexible, accessible solution. Since their launch in July 2023, over a thousand people have accessed these resources, demonstrating the tangible impact of our proactive approach.

We also believe in the power of storytelling. My book, Mental Wealth: A Guide to Being Rich by Seeking Enrichment, combines professional guidance with raw, personal stories from individuals who have overcome mental health challenges. The book is a guide and a testament to the fact that you won't always feel this way and that you can build a meaningful life. This approach is about empowering people and helping them find their voice - a mission that is deeply personal to me.

This proactive approach is gaining traction. I've had the privilege of speaking at events in Dubai and serving as MC for a mental health campaign in Los Angeles. In 2024, my work was recognised with two Women Changing the World awards. I also led an all-female trade mission to New York, supporting Irish businesswomen and helping them find their voice on a global stage.

A New Era of Workplace Well-being

We are at a pivotal moment. The old reactive model is failing, and a new, proactive approach is not just a good idea - it’s a necessity. We believe that companies must understand their essential role in providing access to mental health support for their teams. It’s about creating emotional investment and ownership by asking employees what they truly need to maintain their well-being.

Mental Wealth International is honoured to be an official entrant in the Stevie Awards for Women in Business, a recognition that highlights our unique approach to mental health first aid and how our program is gaining global recognition.

We are grateful for the support of our clients, who have helped us prove that a proactive approach can make a monumental difference. We believe that by shifting the conversation from mental illness to mental well-being, we can create a healthier, more resilient world for everyone.
